Sarnath Dhamek Stupa

सारनाथ धमेख स्तूप

"The sacred site where Gautam Buddha preached his first sermon after attaining enlightenment."

Educational & Historical Overview

Located just 10 km northeast of Varanasi, Sarnath is one of the world's four most holy Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Here, inside the Deer Park, Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon ('Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta') to his five former companions, setting the 'Wheel of Dharma' in motion. The site features the towering 43.6-meter-high Dhamek Stupa, ancient monastery ruins, and the Sarnath Archaeological Museum housing India's national emblem—the Lion Capital of Ashoka.

Historical Heritage: Constructed by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC and expanded in 500 AD during the Gupta Empire, Sarnath remains a monument to world peace and spiritual heritage.
